Unvalidated Ideas #052

[ βœ… Free | Premium ]

Here's a fresh idea you can take out there and validate.

DigitalOcean DB Backups (πŸ—’Raw Notes)

Somehow, DigitalOcean does not have a button that simply takes a backup of an existing database right now.

While they retain previous versions of your database and you can do things like roll back, they do not make it easy to take a backup.

💼 🧠 Create a solution for taking backups of managed databases and other DO services

Unfortunately, we're not first to this idea -- SimpleBackups is already in the space and has quite a robust offering, for example.

That said, SimpleBackups seems to be one of the biggest players in the space, and they cover a lot of different platforms. As we always say on Unvalidated Ideas -- there's no shame in fast following.

Being able to peruse SimpleBackup's pricing, feature offering (and how they tier them) is very beneficial, and being second isn't the end of the world.

Validate as fast as possible. Carrd has insanely good prices, high quality templates, and easy setup.

Try Carrd with my referral code "validate" next time you're ready to validate an idea.

Promotion

Despite the headstart that SimpleBackups has, one way to beat their offering is to niche down on DigitalOcean specifically -- get on the DigitalOcean add-on marketplace.

Surprisingly, not many companies are on DO's add-on marketplace yet (there are less than 25 addons as of this posting), and DigitalOcean looks to be making a Heroku-like experience with add-ons, which means that customers will be pushed towards add-ons, not external solutions.

Getting boosted by the marketplace (and being a long-standing vendor there) is going to give valuable insights and benefits that SimpleBackups won't have (until they're there too). All you have to do is apply to be a DO Vendor.

NOTE This idea is currently for DBs, but Droplets have the very same anti-feature, along with likely many more DO managed services.

Also, there's another competitor worth mentioning (check the idea notes).
